Instructions on Posting by email
Starting up with WordPress — This page provides essential and basic steps for setting up a blog using the WordPress service. For Sewanee Class site users, ignore the first two paragraphs, since these steps have alreay been done for you, either on the art3.sewanee.edu/… or classes.sewanee.edu/…
The following instructions provide some basic recommended settings for your Sewanee WordPress site. The URL for your site may begin with something like http://psych2.sewanee.edu… or http://art3.sewanee.edu…
Login directly to the administration panel. An easy and handy way to do this is to enter your site address, and after your name, enter …/wp-admin. E.g.
Then, make the following changes:
Overall Site Settings
The recommended Theme for the Art2 sites is
Appearance > Themes > select Portfolio Press and it has been set for all new users.
Settings > Discussions: leave as at default values, except
• uncheck Enable threaded (nested) comments
Activate some plugins…
• In Dashboard, click on ‘Jetpack’
Click on ‘Connect to WordPress.com’ button and if you do not have an account with wordpress.com (*this is not the same as the Sewanee wordpress setup, it is a different organization and site), then click on ‘Need and Account’
you will be asked to create an account with an email, username and password. All of these may be the same (not recommended for password) or different from the Sewanee WordPress setup. Once submitted, you’ll receive an email at the address you entered. It will be from WordPress.com (check your junk mail folder if you don’t receive it within a minute or so). In the email, click on Active Account. The ‘Jetpack’ family of plugins is now active. Work your way through them,most are fairly self-explanatory. I ask that you definitely activate:

Spelling and Grammar
• In Dashboard, click on ‘Akismet’. This is an important spam filter, and you must activate it. First, the filter needs to know you are not a spammer yourself, so…
Click on ‘Create a new Akismet Key’ (unless you already have a key: you will know if you do)
Here, the dialogue will lead you to a sign-in form, where you can use your new WordPress.com account username and password. The rest is explained by the process. Happy Un-Spamming!
[Some of you may already have Jetpack and Akismet enabled by me – you can disable them, and re-enable with your own WordPress codes.]
Create a Category, for example for posts about a ‘Family Album’ project
• In Dashboard, click on Posts
then Categories, and
Add New Category: Family Album Project
Posting & Privacy
Now you are ready to (A) create a new post, and
(B) you may, on occasion want to make it readable by password only. [For publicly viewable posts, bypass step (B) and just click on ‘Publish’ when ready.]
NB: For some classes, by default, instructors may ask that ALL journal entries and related material posted to your blog be created as password protected. This can be changed if necessary and after consultation with your instructors.
In Dashboard > Posts > Add New
• (A) Enter a post title
Enter your text.
Rudimentary text formatting may be done with the format bar
Links can be inserted after highlighting text, then clicking on the chainlink button
If you are copying from another text document such as Word or Pages, try either one of the two clipboard formatting tolls ( icons with clipboard+T or W) in the formatting bar, paste the text, then click Insert. This tends to render cleaner formatting.
Text can be coded with HML by clicking on the ‘Text’ tab in the upper right corner of the Post window, and you may return to the What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get (wysiwig, pronounced whizzy-wig) window by clicking on the ‘Visual’ tab. All changes are saved from one view to another and back.
Enter the Category
You should see ‘Family Album Project’ in the right sidebar > Categories window. Check this.
Enter one or more Tags (optional)
These are usually single words, with each tag separated by a comma. They serve a similar function as do hashtags in other social media-ware, but only work within your blog.
If at this or any point you wish to save the post, but not publish it or any changes, in the right sidebar > Publish > Save Draft. You may log out at this point and return to the post later, by logging in, then Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > select your saved post from the list and continue.
• (B) Set the Visibility to Password protected
In the right sidebar > Publish window
Select Password protected and enter a password.
In order to provide access to all course participants, instructors will ask that you use a shared password for all such posts and comments
You may, of course, use another password for particularly sensitive posts, or ones you wish to keep separately accessible.
NB: Posts that are Set to Visibility: Private, may only be viewed by you, after logging in.
